The Sochi Olympics was an awesome opportunity to teach my then-Brownies the Fair Play badge. We enjoyed learning about female athletes in the Olympic games, laughing at our attempts at tabletop curling and having speed-skating races down the halls in our socks.
But Rio beckons. The 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Brazil are ripe with potential for outdoor fun in the sun. Here are some of the fun things our kids will be doing this summer to celebrate the Olympics. I hope you enjoy these 16 ideas for a Summer Olympics party for kids in your neighborhood, family friends or a troop you know.
Food for Your Kids Olympics Party:
- Make edible Olympic torches.
- Bake Gold-medal cookies.
- Try recipes from around the world. (You can find many ideas, sorted by country, by clicking on my World Thinking Day features.)
- Try these kid-friendly recipes from Brazil from Kids World Citizen.
Crafts for Your Kids Olympics Party:
- Make Olympic rings bracelets.
- Make a homemade Olympic torch; then have a torch relay around your block!
- Make uniform T-shirts or bandanas for your teammates.
- Make salt-dough Olympic pins.
- Create a laurel wreath crown.
- Make awards. You’ve got to have medals.
Games for Your Kids Olympics Party:
There are countless outdoor games you can use for an outdoor party filled with giggles, but if you’d like to try to be a little more true to the sports and spirit of the Olympic games, here are a few games and contests to try:
- Running races. Of course.
- Branch out beyond that for other Track & Field events like the discus (use a frisbee), javelin (use a pool noodle), hurdles (use shoeboxes or other small boxes) or shot put (use a softball or Nerf ball).
- Fencing (use pool noodles)
- Play a team sport like football (a.k.a. soccer in America), basketball or beach volleyball.
- Little girls would love having a long strand of ribbon to swirl around for rhythmic gymnastics.
Find a full list of sports featured in the 2016 games.
DYK: Girl Scouts from around the globe can earn the old Games Go Global patch from the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. Instructions for the Games Go Global patch are online, but it appears only the “Silver” and “Bronze” patches are still available.
Lots of fun ideas here. I’ve shared them around social media. Thanks for linking up with us at Creatively Crafty #ccbg. Enjoy your week! (and the Olympics)
