Teamwork and talents are the common themes of the Junior Agent of Change journey. Sometimes it’s easier to talk about those issues in the context of others’ stories, rather than challenges girls are experiencing themselves.
Here are a few movie ideas to tie in with the Agent of Change journey. Not all of them involve female characters, but it’s the journey of teamwork that makes the difference.
Boxtrolls: Quirky, mischievous and good-hearted, these box-wearing creatures have lovingly raised a human boy named “Eggs.” Evil Archibald Snatcher captures the lovable misfits, and it’s up to Eggs and his friend to save them.
Nim’s Island: One of our family’s favorites, Nim’s Island is about a girl who lives on a deserted island with her scientist father. When he doesn’t return from a trip and the island is “invaded,” Nim reaches out via e-mail to her favorite adventure author . Each discovers what it takes to truly become the hero of your own life story.
Nancy DrewWhen Nancy accompanies her father (Tate Donovan–Good Night, and Good Luck.) on a business trip to Los Angeles, she uncovers evidence in the long-unsolved death of a beautiful movie star.
Ponyo: A young boy named Sosuke rescues a goldfish named Ponyo, and they embark on a fantastic journey of friendship and discovery before Ponyo s father, a powerful sorcerer, forces her to return to her home in the sea. But Ponyo s desire to be human upsets the delicate balance of nature and triggers a gigantic storm.
Princess of Thieves: This Disney movie stars Kiera Knightley as the daughter of Robin Hood, who tries to save her father after being captured by the Sheriff of Notingham.
Journey of Natty Gann: Natty lives in Depression-era Chicago and travels cross-country to the Pacific Northwest, hoping to find her father.
The Moon-Spinners: Hayley Mills plays a young English tourist visiting the Isle of Crete. Mistaken identities and perilous escapes lead the junior-miss detective to a final confrontation with a Greek jewel thief aboard the yacht of an eccentric millionairess with a passion for priceless gems and pet cheetahs!
The Parent Trap: Another Hayley Mills movie, the original finds identical twins meeting each other at a summer camp. They plot a switch in order to get their parents back together.
My recommendation is to check with your parents about any movie before sharing with your troop!
