15 Minion crafts to celebrate the new Minions movie

July 6, 2015 11:33 pm

Are you ready for the Minions movie to debut this weekend?

More importantly, are your girls ready?15 Minion craft projects you can do with your Girl Scout or Cub Scout troop. (Some even hit requirements for badges!)

The Minions movie opening weekend brings out memories of our Junior troop’s Minion-themed lock-in this January. It was the girls’ idea, and we happily munched on yellow and banana foods, played games, did skits and watched Despicable Me 2. I’m willing to bet they’ll ask for an encore this winter.

If you’re up for a no-badge, strictly for fun night, a Minion party might just be the way to go. Today, I’ll share 15 craft ideas to get you started.

Lego Minions: Builders to be might want to build their very own Minion characters out of Legos. Frugal Fun 4 Boys shows you how.

Starting to Sew? Learn how to sew Minion finger puppets.
Or, if you’re a little more able, sew your own cellphone cozy.

Wearable Art: Help your girls create this super-cute Minion hairbow.

Footprint Minions: This would be cute for a Kindergarten Daisy troop.

Get Your Clay on: I love this clay Minion creations made by middle-schoolers. Just grab a bucket of air-dry clay and you’re good to go.

Working on your Junior Jewelry badge?  (OK, I know I said “badge-free…”) Take a spin on the traditional washer necklace craft with this Minion take on it from Holly’s Arts and Crafts.

Or clean our your Rainbow Loom collection (because I know you are still finding those bands everywhere) and make a Minion.

DIY T-shirts: I’ve seen everything from the yellow face T-shirts to pretend suspenders. But my favorite is the hand-drawn custom Minion T-shirts my girls decorated on their overnight. (Plus, I think white T-shirts are easier to find at times than the yellow ones.)

Perler Bead fun: If you’re willing to splurge, Amazon is bringing out Perler beads sets for Minion-themed crafts beginning Wednesday. The kits range from a trial-sized project of Bob, Kevin and Stuart to big buckets that a troop might enjoy. (Prices range from $8 for the trial sets to $13 for the 6,000-piece buckets, and they are Prime Eligible.)

SWAPS: What would a Girl Scout post be without SWAPS? Here are some Minion SWAPS easy enough for a Daisy troop to make.

A Shoe-In: Instead of tie-dying your tennies, design a Minion theme instead.

Nail Night: Older girls might just enjoy decorating their nails to look like Minions. Check out this step-by-step.

Paper Craft: Print off these templates for DIY Minions, fold and go!

Minion Ornaments: Get a head start on the holidays with Minion ornaments for your tree. You can order clear ornaments out of season here.

And my favorite addition: If you’re having a full-blown Minion event, you must post a copy or two of the party rules.
