Momma, Did You Hear the News? A Conversation Starter for Kids

Momma, Did You Hear the News? Talking with your kids about stressful situations in your community and how to talk about respectWhat can a Girl Scout blog say about a book on police encounters, negative news, and how to calm a child’s fears?

Turns out, a lot.

I was invited to review Momma, Did You Hear the News? by Sanya Whittaker Gragg MSW as part of Multicultural Children’s Book Day.

At first glance, Momma, Did You Hear the News is a book about a young boy disturbed about a police shooting in his community. He comes to his parents, clearly upset, uncertain about what he’s learned and whether all police officers are actually bad.

His parents turn it into a life lesson about displaying respect in a catchy way – “memorize the 5. a-l-i-v-e”:

  • Always use your manners
  • Listen and comply
  • In control of your actions and emotions
  • Visible hands always
  • Explain every movement.

Think of how many times, we as teens and young children, could have benefited from that advice – particularly the first three! If we all slowed down a bit and checked our manners and emotions, and respected each individual for who we are, the world would be a radically different place.

Girl Scouting is about teaching respect for authority and respect for ourselves and others. Ultimately, it’s through this that we all make the world a better place – one encounter at a time.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2017 (1/27/18) is in its 5th year and was founded by Valarie Budayr from Jump Into A Book and Mia Wenjen from PragmaticMom. Our mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in home and school bookshelves while also working diligently to get more of these types of books into the hands of young readers, parents and educators.
