The Girl Scout Global Action Award’s focus this year on access to education can seem a bit daunting. But bringing this to the girls’ level can easily happen without having to organize field trips or guest speakers.
If you need an easy to implement one-meeting meeting plan for your younger girl scouts, the Global Action Action Award can be easily done! Currently, Global Action Award requirements are not available in the Volunteer Toolkit from GSUSA.
To help leaders out, I’ve developed packets for troop download and use. Currently there are two versions available: for Daisies and Brownies (who may need a more visual vs. written focus) and for Juniors.
Girl Scout Global Action Award
The Global Action award from GSUSA helps girls learn and work together to make a difference on an issue that affects girls and women all over the world. It’s an official national award and can be worn on the front of vests and sashes at all levels of Girl Scouting.
The theme typically changes each year and can be earned annually. Awards can be purchased through the Girl Scout shop or your council. It’s a wonderful complement to activities you may already be doing for World Thinking Day, but it can be earned any time of year.
Read on to Learn
Some troops enjoy reading together. Here are some books geared for younger readers that can help your Daisy or Brownie Girl Scouts learn more about education around the world:
Malala: Activist for Girls’ Education
For the Right to Learn: Malala Yousafzai’s Story
While Malala is one of the most famous education advocates in recent history, there are many tales around the world on working to improve education around the world:
The Librarian of Basra: A True Story from Iraq
Rain School (a book about education in Chad)
Nasreen’s Secret School: A True Story from Afghanistan
My Librarian Is a Camel: How Books Are Brought to Children Around the World
